Site Activities

Now Known generally as the "site with the Environmental Dimension", Northern Heights offers a unique experience of conservation and 'green' activities in self-programming fun and practical ways.

Around the site you will find "feel me" boxes, an insect hotel, butterfly and moth garden, 'dead hedges' for habitat and a stag beetle haven.

A weather station provides opportunities in a fun way for learning about clouds, wind and rainfall. Wood art and an unusual trail are also examples of the interesting self-programming activities on site.

The site offers a nature quiz, a tree quiz, a simple orienteering course, a box of environmental activities, parachute games, photograph trails and a fitness course.

On a walk round the pond you will see tracks of the ducks, learn about fungi and, in the summer, visit Toad with his friends from Wind in The Willows. At the right time of year the mallard, moorhens and coots can be seen guarding their tiny young and you can see the frogspawn and watch the tadpoles.

Discover what is living in the many bird boxes on site-or maybe you will see where the elusive bats roost before they fly at dusk.

You can visit our bird hide where the birds feed and fly around the new bird scrape. It is here that you are most likely to see magnificent dragon and damsel flies.

Many varieties of birds may be seen on site - the robin may visit your kitchen: you may be lucky enough to see a kingfisher at the pond: the local kestrel will be likely to visit you regularly: or you may see buzzards as they circle overhead

Record the signs of life you can see in the wetland pond while the heron flaps by.

A 'miniature' charcoal burner's camp will give you an idea of the life of one of these ancient craftsman. In the organic vegetable garden compost heap you may be lucky enough to see a grass snake enjoying the warmth. Visit the tree nursery and see how mighty oaks grow from the smallest of Acorns.

Will you be 'spooked' by the dangerous creature's locker or prefer to play old English board games or chess or draughts on the Earth House patio, where the boards are marked out in the patio stones?

Well placed for expeditions into the surrounding countryside, but only half an hour away from the London Underground system the site offers excellent facilities for the Duke of Edinburgh Award Expeditions and over-night activities.

Archery is available between 1st April and 31st October each year.

Information activity boards and "save the planet" projects can be found over the site giving interesting opportunities for learning and doing.

We look forward to welcoming you to Northern Heights
